Ahmad Hossein Fallahi, a representative of the people of the city of Hamedan in the Iranian Parliament, made the remarks in a TV interview late on Saturday as he was referring to a large lithium reserve that has been recently discovered in his constituency.
He said several countries had requested to cooperate with Iran in plans to extract lithium from the newly-discovered reserve.
“We can use this element in electric car batteries, and with this volume, we can supply 20% of the world’s lithium,” he explained.
“This mine creates an international capability for Iran, and the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade should have a detailed plan for it,” the lawmaker argued, adding that other countries are willing to invest in the mine despite the US sanctions and because of the strategic nature of the reserve.
Iran announced the discovery of the Hamedan lithium reserve in February.
Ebrahimali Molabeigi, the head of the exploration department of the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade, said at the time that the reserve contains some 8.5 million metric tons of lithium ore, adding that more reserves are expected to be discovered in Hamedan, a city located in western Iran.
